Creating Space for What Comes Next
January is a natural moment for reflection. Organizations pause to consider not just what they want to do next, but how to do it well. For creative organizations, strategic planning can be intimidating. Artistic energy is high, but clarity around structure, roles, and long-term direction can unclear. That’s where our strategic plan with Jabberwocky Studio began.
Jabberwocky entered strategic planning at an important moment of growth. Like many small arts organizations, they were navigating how to provide high-quality art and STEM experiences to young people, strengthen governance, and move forward intentionally — without losing what makes the organization unique. Partner for Better’s role was not to impose a generic framework, but to customize a process that fit their size, culture, and pace.
“Jessica and Kasey worked collaboratively yet in a structured fashion with us, ensuring that Jabberwocky’s unique needs as a small organization were met and the process stayed on track.”
– Linda Schust, Executive Director
The SOAR Analysis & Strategic Planning
We grounded the work in a SOAR analysis (Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations, and Results) to keep the process both aspirational and practical. Through facilitated conversations and shared reflection, the board developed a clearer, collective understanding of where the organization was headed and how to get there. That clarity translated into a three-year strategic priority with a one-year goal that was designed to be useful and engaging. The plan provided a roadmap for decision-making while remaining flexible enough to adapt as learning that will happen along the way.
The collaborative process of developing the strategic plan was just as important as the plan itself to the team at Jabberwocky. As the saying goes, it is about the journey, not just the destination. Along the way, we saw the team strengthen communication and clarify expectations while they created healthier governance practices. It also helped them build confidence and a shared sense of responsibility for the organization’s future.
“For Jabberwocky, the PROCESS of planning was almost as valuable as the plan we produced. The collaborative process made me feel empowered to go forward and achieve what we have set out to achieve!”
– Sarah Sandkuhl, Board Chair
This experience reflects what we hear consistently from clients: that thoughtful expertise, clear and practical guidance, and a supportive, respectful approach make it easier for organizations to move forward with confidence.
With a clear roadmap and improved governance structures in place, Jabberwocky moved into its next chapter positioned for sustainable growth — equipped not just with a plan, but with the tools to use it well. Linda, the Executive Director, summed it by saying:
“Hiring Partner for Better to guide us through our first strategic planning was the smartest choice Jabberwocky made in 2025. Due to the carefully constructed, practicable strategic plan and improved governance, we have soared this year.”
We’re grateful to have partnered with an organization that values reflection, learning, and intentional growth. If your organization is entering a season of transition or asking big questions about what comes next, we’d love to help you build clarity that supports your mission — and the people behind it.
