Sliding Scale Rates: Embracing Equity

Why Equity Matters in Nonprofit Consulting

We recognize that equitable access to resources, opportunities, and support is essential for fostering a fair and inclusive society. One way we support equity is by offering sliding-scale rates at Partner for Better. But what exactly are sliding-scale rates, and how do they promote equity in the nonprofit sector?

What Are Sliding Scale Rates?

A sliding scale for rates is a flexible pricing model that adjusts fees based on a client’s financial capacity, ensuring we can provide services for a diverse range of organizations. Instead of charging a fixed rate for all clients, we assess various factors—such as an organization’s budget, size, mission, funding sources, and overall financial situation—to determine a fair and sustainable fee.

This practice ensures our services remain accessible to all sorts of organizations, from grassroots initiatives with a staff of one to established nonprofits with a full team behind them. By tailoring our fees to each client’s unique circumstances, we strive to eliminate financial barriers and promote equity in the nonprofit sector.

In order to determine a rate for our clients, we look at a few factors including:

  • Organizational budget and age
  • Makeup of the organizational leadership and how it compares to the communities it serves and impacts
  • Organizational structure and history of working with Partner for Better
  • What type of service we are providing

Why Equity in the Nonprofit Sector Matters

Equity is important in the nonprofit sector because organizations do not always have equal access to funding, resources, or support. Large, well-established nonprofits often have access to major grants, corporate sponsorships, and dedicated fundraising teams, allowing them to invest in consulting services, strategic planning, and professional development. In contrast, smaller grassroots organizations often operate with limited or no budgets, rely on volunteer labor, and struggle to secure sustainable funding.

A grassroots organization with a single staff member may desperately need strategic guidance but cannot afford the same consulting fees as a national nonprofit with millions in annual revenue. Without equitable access to these services, smaller organizations are left to navigate complex challenges on their own, stifling their ability to grow, secure funding, and create meaningful change in their communities. By offering sliding scale rates, we aim to break down these financial barriers and ensure that all mission-driven organizations—regardless of size or budget—can access the expert support they need to thrive.

How Sliding Scale Pricing Works:

Assessment of Finances:
We consider the potential client’s annual budget, funding, and available resources to gauge their ability to pay. A small grassroots nonprofit with limited grant funding may pay a lower rate than a well-funded, established organization.

Tiered or Custom Pricing:
Some sliding scale models use set tiers (e.g., small, mid-sized, and large organizations each pay different rates). Others (like ours) use a more customized approach, adjusting fees based on the organization’s unique circumstances. Each fee is personalized to that particular organization.

The goal is not to give discounts but to ensure fairness—so that all organizations, regardless of size or financial constraints, can access the services they need.

Partner for Better: Advancing Equity in the Nonprofit Sector

At its core, our sliding scale model is about more than just pricing—it’s about advancing equity in the nonprofit sector by ensuring that organizations of all sizes have access to the strategic support they need to thrive and do good in the world. By tailoring our rates based on each client’s financial capacity, we help level the playing field, making high-quality consulting services accessible to small organizations and well-established nonprofits alike. We believe that when all mission-driven organizations have the tools and guidance to succeed, the entire sector benefits.
