Gratitude Isn’t Squishy, Touchy-Feely Stuff
In the nonprofit world, gratitude and increasing nonprofit employee engagement sometimes gets treated like the “soft stuff,” nice when there’s time, but let’s be honest, there’s never time. We’re too busy juggling grants, events, and about 47 urgent emails. Here’s the truth:

Gratitude is the SECRET SAUCE that holds teams together and keeps missions moving forward.
Taking time to say thank you, celebrate a small win, or notice someone’s effort isn’t fluff — it’s strategy. Think of it like the sauce that makes plain chicken worth eating. Gratitude adds flavor, keeps people coming back to the table, and reminds us why we do this work in the first place. It builds connection, motivation, and trust. It reminds us that people are the power behind this hard work, and they need to feel valued in order to stay engaged and energized.
Gallup’s famous Q12 employee engagement survey backs it up. One of the top drivers of nonprofit employee engagement is a simple statement: “In the last seven days, I have received recognition or praise for doing good work.”
Seven days! That’s how often people need to feel seen to stay connected and motivated. When people feel appreciated, they show up with heart — and that’s when the magic happens. We can’t always offer big bonuses or extra staff, but we can build cultures of gratitude that increase employee engagement. Try:
- Create a gratitude jar. Spot good deeds, drop a note, and read it together at the team meeting.
- Make a Thank You doodle wall or post positive sticky notes.
- Send a card to someone at home!
- Highlight teammates on social media.
These small habits can really stick to your ribs. Think of gratitude as barbecue sauce — sweet, tangy, smoky, and full of personality. Every region has its own unique flavor: Carolina loves vinegar, Kansas City goes thick and sweet, and Texas swears by spice and smoke. You can’t fake good barbecue, and you can’t fake a genuine connection. Both take time, care, and a willingness to get a little messy along the way.
So when we call gratitude the “secret sauce” to nonprofit employee engagement, picture it like a great barbecue recipe — something you make your own, something that takes patience, and something that leaves people feeling full and happy.
So go on — pass the sauce! Take five minutes today to sprinkle some gratitude on someone’s plate. Send that thank-you text, drop a sticky note, or shout out a teammate who showed up big. You’ll be amazed at how one spoonful of appreciation can flavor a whole week.
