If we are honest with ourselves, working in the nonprofit world can be equal parts inspiring and exhausting. We show up every day because we care deeply about people, causes, justice, equity, and change. But somewhere between the grant deadlines, board reports, and community crises, we sometimes forget something essential:
Fun matters, too.
In fact, having fun at work isn’t frivolous—it’s a form of resilience. Embracing fun is one of our core values at Partner for Better because it’s a way to reconnect with each other, reduce burnout, and keeps lighting the fire of our passion for the long haul.
Why Nonprofit Fun Shouldn’t Be Optional
Nonprofit professionals usually are running with small staff numbers and are often juggling enormous emotional and logistical burdens. When you’re constantly pushing to meet the needs of so many with limited resources, rest and joy can feel like luxuries. But here’s the truth: burnout doesn’t make the world better—rested, supported people do. Burnout is not a badge of honor.
By encouraging fun at work, you can see the results in:
- Boosted team morale and increased creativity
- Strengthened relationships and collaboration
- Giving your brain a much-needed break
- Helping you stay connected to your “why”
So how do we make space for joy without dropping the ball or losing sight of our missions?
5 Ways to Have More Fun (Without Losing Focus)
- Celebrate the Little Wins
Got a grant application submitted? Finished a big fundraising event? Survived a tough meeting? Celebrate! Do a five-minute dance party in the office with friends. Small celebrations keep energy up and remind us that progress is happening, even on the hard days. - Gamify the Mundane
Turn repetitive tasks into friendly competitions. See who can get their inbox to zero the quickest. Create silly awards for administrative victories. A little light-heartedness can make even budget reviews feel (slightly) less painful. - Create a Joy Ritual
Start team meetings with a one-word mood check, fun facts or random trivia questions, or a two-minute round robin daily share. These rituals create connection and keep things human. - Use Humor as a Pressure Valve
A shared laugh is a powerful thing. Whether it’s through Slack threads full of silly cat gifs or inside jokes about that one ancient printer that refuses to die and makes the weirdest noises, humor gives us a break from the heaviness that exists in some nonprofit work. - Build In Playtime—Seriously
Happy hours, themed dress-up days, volunteer outings, or just a shared coffee break in the sunshine. You don’t need a ping-pong table to have fun. You just need intention and the goal to make it happen.
Leadership Sets the Tone
If you’re in a leadership role, know that your attitude toward joy sets the tone. When you model play, permission to rest, and celebration of small wins, others will follow. And if you’re not in leadership? Advocate for fun anyway. It’s part of building a healthier workplace culture.
You Deserve Joy, Too
We are in this work because we believe in changing the world for the better. But none of us can do that alone, or on an empty tank. Bringing joy into your workplace isn’t a distraction—it’s part of your strategy for sustainability.
So go ahead. Be silly. Laugh loud. Wear the costume to the Zoom meeting. Your mission will thank you for it.
