Partner for Better is a company dedicated to helping nonprofits and funders build strong foundations, grow sustainably, and achieve long-term impact in their communities. I want to get nerdy with you and share some data that has shaped not only my understanding of the nonprofit sector but also the way we work at Partner for Better.

If you’re reading this, you’re probably a donor, volunteer, board member or staff of a nonprofit organization.

My hope is that our data can help you better understand how to support the nonprofits you’re involved in. So, let’s dive in.

Three themes that shaped the work we do with nonprofits

My dissertation focused on understanding the unique dynamics and challenges nonprofits face, especially around sustainability, stakeholder relationships, and decision-making. Through this research, I identified three key themes that are essential for nonprofit success:

The Power of Stakeholders

First up is the power of stakeholders. In the nonprofit world, stakeholders have incredible influence. Funders, in particular, have a huge impact on how resources are allocated and what priorities are pursued. At the same time, clients and community needs drive the work, but their voices must be heard and respected in the decision-making process. The challenge here is to align these different stakeholder perspectives in a way that stays true to the organization’s mission while meeting the expectations of those who hold the power to fund, support, and amplify the work.

Relationships Vs. Roles

The second insight is the delicate balance between relationships and roles. Nonprofits are driven by relationships. However, one of the challenges nonprofits face is that these relationships can sometimes turn into rigid roles. When this happens, organizations can become stuck in patterns that limit innovation and restrict adaptability. It’s crucial to continuously nurture these relationships as dynamic and evolving rather than allowing them to solidify into static roles.

Data Diversity in Decision Making

Third, we have the importance of diverse data in decision-making. In many sectors, data drives decisions, but for nonprofits, it’s about more than just numbers like impact metrics or financial reports. To make effective decisions, nonprofits need to consider the stories, experiences, and perspectives of the people they serve and the teams that do the work. This data diversity ensures that decisions are not only informed by metrics but are also grounded in real, human experiences, creating solutions that are effective and deeply meaningful.

These three insights have profoundly influenced the way we work at Partner for Better. To help nonprofits and their funders achieve meaningful, lasting impact we have three primary areas of focus .

Three Things we Help Nonprofits and Funders Do

  1. First, we help organizations build sustainable, strategic growth. We know that growth requires not just resources but also careful planning, strategic prioritization, and identification of funding to support those priorities.
  2. Second, we are dedicated to supporting the teams that do the work. Nonprofit staff and volunteers are the backbone of every organization, and they deserve tools, resources, and support that empower them to do their best work.
  3. Finally, we focus on helping organizations understand and communicate their results. We work with nonprofits and funders to develop clear metrics and evaluate their programs, giving them the confidence to share their achievements and advocate for continued support.
